New Met Council Chair Susan Haigh sworn in Wednesday, January 12

ST. PAUL—Jan. 12, 2011—Susan Haigh, president and CEO of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, was sworn in Wednesday, January 12 as the new chair of the Metropolitan Council.

The oath of office was administered by her husband, Ramsey County District Judge Gregg Johnson. After the swearing-in, Chair Haigh spoke briefly about her priorities and plans for the selection of the remaining 16 Council members. The ceremony took place at the start of Wednesday’s Met Council meeting in the Council chambers, 390 N. Robert St., St. Paul.

The Metropolitan Council is the regional planning organization for the seven-county metro area. It runs the regional bus and light-rail system, collects and treats wastewater and coordinates water resources preservation, plans regional parks and administers funds that provide housing opportunities for low- and moderate-income individuals and families. The 17-member Metropolitan Council is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the governor.
